Extortion on Shariatpur Expressway, youth arrested
Police have arrested a youth on charges of extortion from a car in the Naodoba area of Jazira Expressway in Shariatpur. He was arrested from the Kalu Bepari Kandi area of Naodoba Union of the upazila on Saturday (March 7) night.
The arrested youth is named Jewel Hawlader. He is the son of Meraj Hawlader of that area. Earlier in the afternoon, a video of him extorting from a private car went viral on social media Facebook.
Jewel Hawlader had been extorting money by stopping microbuses and private cars on the Dhaka-Bhanga Expressway in the Naodoba area for several days. A local journalist was passing through that road yesterday afternoon. At that time, the youth collected two hundred taka from the driver of his private car. The journalist secretly recorded the matter on his mobile phone. When the matter spread on social media, the police arrested him.
In this regard, Padma Bridge South Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Shah Alam said, “A young man named Jewel has been arrested on charges of extortion. Legal action against him is under process.”
