Evidence of irregularities in allotment of plots to Sheikh family found: ACC Director General.

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has found preliminary evidence of irregularities in the allotment of 60 katha plots in the Purbachal New City Project against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and six members of her family. ACC Director General (DG) Md. Akhter Hossain confirmed this information to reporters on Wednesday.

The ACC said that through political influence and abuse of power, Sheikh Hasina and her family members, with the help of senior officials of the Capital Development Authority (RAJUK), have allocated six plots of 10 katha each from the diplomatic zone of Sector 27 of the Purbachal Project, totaling 60 kathas.

The complaint states that the people who received these allotments include Sheikh Hasina, her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, daughter Saima Wazed Putul, sister Sheikh Rehana, sister’s son Radwan Mujib Siddique Bobby and daughter Azmina Siddique Rupanti.

Sheikh Hasina has been allotted a 10-katha plot (plot number 009). On August 3, 2022, RAJUK issued a plot allotment letter in her name.

Sajeeb Wazed Joy (plot number 015) and daughter Saima Wazed Putul (plot number 017) have also received plots of 10 katha each.

Joy’s allotment letter was issued on October 24, 2022, and the ownership registry was completed on November 10. Putul’s allotment letter was issued on November 2 of that year.

Sheikh Rehana has also been allotted a 10-katha plot (plot number 013). Plots of the same size have also been allotted in the names of her son Radwan Mujib Siddique (plot number 011) and daughter Azmina Siddique (plot number 019).

In October last year, the High Court formed a three-member committee to investigate allegations made in the media about irregularities in the allotment of plots in Purbachal in the names of six members of Sheikh Hasina’s family.

At the same time, the committee was also asked to investigate allegations of irregularities in the allocation of plots by RAJUK during the last 15 years of the Awami League government (between 2009 and 2024).

Director General Md. Akhter Hossain said, “There has been significant progress in our investigation. We have collected sufficient information and data, which clearly shows abuse of power. We will provide details once the investigation team submits its report. However, we will be able to publish some good information soon.”

Earlier on December 22, the ACC decided to investigate allegations of smuggling $300 million (about Tk 30,000 crore) abroad against Sheikh Hasina and her son Sajeeb Wazed Joy.

The ACC said that the investigation is ongoing and appropriate action will be taken once the final report in this regard is submitted. However, the Director General said that it would not be right to comment now.

It is worth noting that Sheikh Hasina left the country on August 5 after being in power for 15 consecutive years under pressure from the student movement.
