    EU Ambassador visits garment factories in Narayanganj.

    European Union (EU) Ambassador Michael Miller visited two export-oriented garment industry enterprises in Narayanganj. He was accompanied by Abu Said Belal, Trade Advisor to the EU Delegation to Bangladesh. The ambassador first visited the garment factory of the Epilion Group in Madpur of the district at 11 am. Then he went to the knit garment owners’ organization BKMEA at 12:30 pm.

    Ehsan Shamim and other leaders and garment owners spoke to him. BKMEA President gave Michael Muller various ideas about the quality of Bangladesh’s garment industry. Later, BKMEA leaders including Muller held a press conference.

    At that time, the ambassador said, “Today (yesterday) I visited the knitwear sector of Bangladesh. Bangladesh is one of the world’s leading garment producing countries.” We have talked to factory owners and employees about how to take the EU-Mong relationship forward. We want big investors to invest in Bangladesh.

    BKMEA Executive President Fazle Ehsan Shamim said, LDC (Least Developed Country) graduation is coming. We have asked them for a standard grace period. It will take time to co-operate with the new GSP law. Bangladesh will not get additional GSP benefits as per Safe Guard Article 29 in the new graduation. We have requested that this be corrected and that the issue of Bangladesh getting additional GSP benefits be discussed in their parliament.

    BKMEA President Mohammad Hatem said, “We are not in a position at the moment to go for LDC graduation. We have demanded that the deadline set by 2026 be extended. We have demanded that at least five more years be given.”
