Elder brother dies after falling into septic tank to retrieve wallet, younger brother hospitalized

A young man died while trying to retrieve a wallet that fell into a septic tank in Juri, Moulvibazar. While searching for him, his younger brother also fell into the tank and fell ill. He is currently undergoing treatment in the hospital. The incident took place on Wednesday night in the Domabari area bordering Goalbari Union of the upazila. The deceased youth is Sohel Ahmed (27). He is the son of Mazammil Ali of Domabari area and was a daily wage laborer by profession. His younger brother Emon Ahmed (25) was injured. According to local sources, Sohel went to the toilet last night. The wallet tucked in his waist in a lungi fell into the septic tank through the gap in the commode. Later, he went down into the tank to retrieve the wallet. After a long time, when Sohel did not come up, his younger brother Emon went down into the tank to search for it. After that, they could not get any response. A team from Juri Fire Service reached the spot around 9 pm on receiving the information and launched a rescue operation. Fire service personnel used a ladder to climb down into the tank and rescue the two brothers. Shamim Ahmed, an officer at Juri Fire Service Station, said that it is initially believed that the two brothers were affected by toxic gas inside the tank. Asit Ranjan Debnath, resident medical officer of Juri Upazila Health Complex, said that Sohel Ahmed died before being brought to the hospital. Emon Ahmed is out of danger. He has been shifted to the 250-bed hospital in Moulvibazar for better treatment.
