Driver and helper arrested for attempting to kill Hasnat and Sarjis by running over truck.
A truck driver and helper have been arrested on charges of attempting to kill Hasnat Abdullah and Sarjis Alam, two coordinators of the anti-discrimination student movement, by running over them with a truck. The Lohagara police station in Chittagong arrested them on Wednesday night.
The arrested driver has been identified as Asim Ahmed Newaz and helper Sheikh Sabuj Mahatir. They are being questioned.
Mohammad Sami, a second-year student of the Bangla department of Bandarban College, who was in the convoy, said, “The attempt to run over Hasnat and Sarjis was planned to kill them. The driver and helper of the accused truck are in police custody.”
It is learned that the accident occurred at around 7:30 pm on Wednesday at the Haji Road intersection of Chunati Union on the Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar highway after visiting the grave of advocate Saiful Islam Alif, who was killed in Chittagong. However, two coordinators were unharmed in this incident. They had a convoy of three vehicles. Among them, Hasnat and Sarjis were in the car that was involved in the accident, so they changed cars midway.
A person named Ahmadullah Shakib wrote on Facebook that on their way back from visiting the grave of martyred advocate Saiful Islam Alif Bhai, a truck was rammed into the convoy of Hasnat Abdullah and Sarjis Alam, conveners of the anti-discrimination student movement, at the intersection of Haji Street in Chunati Union on the Chittagong-Cox’s Bazar highway at approximately 7:30 pm. When we tried to stop the vehicle with our bikes, they also tried to ram us. By the grace of God, we survived.
ASI Md. Alim, in-charge of Lohagara Police Station, confirmed the information about the accident. He said that a truck has been seized in this incident. Driver Asim Ahmed Newaz and his helper Sheikh Sabuj Mahatir are being questioned.
Meanwhile, Hannan Masud, the main organizer of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, called for a program on Wednesday night to protest the incident.
In a post on his Facebook profile, he wrote, “A protest march will be held from TSC’s Raju Statue at 10:45 pm to protest the attempted murder of Anti-Discrimination Student Movement convener Hasnat Abdullah and central coordinator Sarjis Alam by running over them with a truck.”

Hasnat Abdullah said, “My brother Saiful was brutally murdered. This ISKCON must be banned as a terrorist group.”
He said, “We have not forgotten how ISKCON is creating unrest in Bangladesh under India’s prescription with the help of the autocratic Awami League. If a extremist organization is run in the name of religion, not even a hand’s breadth of space will be given in Bangladesh.”
It is worth noting that on Tuesday afternoon, there was a clash between the police and the protesters demanding the release of Sanatan Jagran Mancha spokesperson Chinmoy Krishna Das Brahmachari. Lawyer Alif was killed during this. Police also said that 12 police personnel were injured.
