3 Dead, Dozens Injured in Violent Clash Between Zubair and Saad Supporters in Tongi.

Three people were killed in a violent clash between supporters of Zubair and Saad at the Bishwa Ijtema Maidan in Tongi early Wednesday. More than a hundred others were injured during the incident.

The violence erupted around 4 a.m. when the two groups clashed over control of the Ijtema Maidan.

The deceased have been identified as Md. Aminul Islam Bachchu (70) and Belal (60), both from Pakundia Upazila in Kishoreganj. The identity of the third victim is still unknown.

A source at the Shaheed Ahsan Ullah Master General Hospital in Tongi confirmed that Bachchu’s body is being kept there. According to a senior hospital staff member, two of the victims died at the hospital, while the third passed away in the ambulance.

Among the injured are Hannan (55) from Begdubi, Gazipur, Delwar Hossain (56) from Chandpur, Khorshed Alam (50), Faisal (18), a student of Markazul Uloom Aswaria Madrasa, Alauddin (35) from Debidwar, Cumilla, and Rishad (30). Several Zubair supporters were also hurt, including Nurul Hakim (30), Salauddin Bhuiyan (50), Saad (21), and Siam (24).

Habibullah Raihan, media coordinator for the Zubair followers, spoke to the media, condemning the attack. “At 4 a.m. on Wednesday, Saad’s supporters ambushed our group while we were sleeping, killing one of our brothers and leaving many others seriously injured. They’ve been taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, and we will share their names and details soon.”

Tongi West Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge, Iskandar Habibur Rahman, confirmed the clash and told reporters, “The incident took place around 4 a.m. on Wednesday. We are still gathering details about the number of casualties. The police are working to restore order.”

The conflict stems from a long-standing dispute over the Ijtema Maidan. On December 3, Maulana Zubair’s supporters completed their version of the Ijtema, which was intended as a preparation for the 2025 World Ijtema. They had requested that the administration hand over the Maidan to Saad’s followers for their own gathering on December 20. However, Zubair’s supporters refused to give up the grounds, leading to a series of attacks and confrontations between the two factions.
