    ‘All important documents on the eighth and ninth floors have been burnt’

    Although the fire that broke out in Building 7 of the Bangladesh Secretariat was brought under control after six hours, the Fire Service believes that all important documents on the eighth and ninth floors of the building have been burnt.

    Brigadier General Muhammad Zahed Kamal, DG of the Fire Service and Civil Defense Department, expressed this fear at a press conference this Thursday morning.

    He said, ‘The eighth and ninth floors have been damaged the most in the fire. It is believed that the documents there may have been damaged by the fire.

    Departments of the Ministry of Youth and Sports, Ministry of Posts, Telecommunication and Information Technology, Ministry of Local Government, Ministry of Rural Development and Cooperatives, Ministry of Labour and Employment, Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Road Transport and Bridges are located in Building 7 of the Secretariat, as per information available on the website of the Cabinet Division.

    According to the sources in the fire service, they received the news of the fire at 1:52 am last night. The fire service personnel reached the spot at 1:54 am. Initially, eight units worked to control the fire but later the number of units was increased. The fire was brought under control after about five hours at 1 am. However, before that the sixth, seventh, eighth and ninth floors of the building were burnt down in the raging fire.

    Brigadier General Muhammad Zahed Kamal, DG of Fire Service and Civil Defense Department, said to a press briefing from the scene that 20 of their units and 211 firemen have been working to control the fire. But because of space, 10 units could work actively. Now the fire service workers are trying to enter the rooms and extinguish the fire.

    Muhammad Zahed Kamal said, there was the most damage in the sixth and seventh floor except that, most floors have been damaged. And this fire spread through mainly power lines.

    DG said, “We can’t confirm the source of fire yet. Fire may have come out from a short circuit. Still, we don’t want to say about this without being sure’.
