Discussions were fruitful, US Ambassador’s message to take relations forward
US Ambassador Christensen has indicated that the existing diplomatic relations between Bangladesh and the United States will be further strengthened. The US Ambassador arrived at the Foreign Ministry at around 11 am today, Sunday (February 8). At the beginning of the event, he held a meeting with Foreign Secretary Asad Al Siam. Then he went to the office of Foreign Affairs Advisor Md. Towhid Hossain.
After the meeting, the US Ambassador said that various issues of bilateral relations between the two countries were discussed. Ambassador Christensen said, ‘I had a wonderful meeting with Foreign Affairs Advisor Md. Towhid Hossain. We had fruitful discussions on important aspects of our bilateral relations.’
A source in the Foreign Ministry said that Bangladesh is looking for an opportunity to reduce the tariffs imposed by the United States. Bangladesh and the United States may sign a trade agreement in this regard tomorrow (Monday). Last month, the Chief Adviser’s Press Wing said that Bangladesh has made “significant progress” in strengthening mutually beneficial trade relations with the United States. This has opened the way for Bangladesh’s garment sector to gain access to the US market and create new opportunities.
The Press Wing also reported that during his visit to Washington, US Trade Representative Ambassador Jamieson Greer, at the request of National Security Advisor Dr. Khalilur Rahman, agreed to discuss with President Donald Trump the possibility of reducing the 20 percent tariff imposed on Bangladesh. It was also learned that the two sides agreed on an innovative solution to support Bangladesh’s export sector.
