Discrimination, hatred and violence against women are not decreasing.
Today is International Women’s Day. Like other countries in the world, the day will be celebrated in Bangladesh with the theme ‘Rights, Equality, Empowerment: Development of Women and Girls’. The Sheikh Hasina government fell on August 5 last year through the student-public movement against discrimination to eliminate discrimination in all aspects of society and the state. Women were at the forefront of this movement. At that time, the women’s community protested against all kinds of oppression. Blood was also shed. That is why this year, the day, which comes after a different context, is being vigorously discussed to what extent it has brought about changes in the safety of women in society and equal rights in all activities.
Rights activists from several organizations working on women’s rights told Usam Somi that women have made considerable progress in the country. They are making a big contribution to the economy. In addition, women’s participation in politics, military and civil administration, education,
health sectors, including sports and cultural activities, has increased. However, discrimination, hatred and violence against women have not decreased. Rather, women’s rights activists believe that it has increased in some areas.
In such a situation for women in Bangladesh, International Women’s Day will be celebrated today, Saturday. This day is celebrated every year on March 8. Various programs have been taken up by the government and the private sector to mark the day.
Program: The Ministry of Women and Children Affairs has organized various programs to mark the day. Principal Advisor Professor Muhammad Yunus will be present as the chief guest at a special program of Women’s Day organized by the ministry at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the capital today. The ministry will issue a supplementary document to mark the day. At the same time, ‘Indomitable Women’ and ‘Begum Rokeya Padak’ will be awarded to women who have made unparalleled contributions in various fields. Women cricketers in particular will be given special honors at today’s program.
On the occasion of the day, various political parties, organizations and organizations working on women’s rights have organized discussion meetings, human chains and rallies. Among them, a colorful rally will be held in front of the central office at 11 am today under the initiative of the Bangladesh Nationalist Women’s Party. The Communist Party of Bangladesh (CPB) Central Women’s Cell will organize a rally and procession in front of the party’s central office Mukti Bhaban at 10 am.
When asked, Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Women and Child Affairs, Momtaz Ahmed, told our time that this year, Women’s Day will be celebrated with due dignity like other times. He said, but this year we will especially honor women cricketers.
Why women’s participation is necessary: According to the World Bank, countries where the rate of women’s participation in the labor force is high, have a tendency to strengthen their economies. This is because when women are provided with education, training and employment opportunities, they can fully contribute to the economy.
Despite various obstacles including torture, violence, insecurity, the development of women in Bangladesh in the last 5 decades is remarkable. This progress is also being appreciated abroad. In the last one and a half decades, the rate of women’s participation in the labor force in Bangladesh has increased by 14 percent to 43 percent, which is double that of India and Pakistan.
11 demands of the Women’s Day Committee: A discussion meeting was held at the National Press Club auditorium at 10 am on Friday at the initiative of the International Women’s Day Committee. The main objective of the meeting was to raise awareness about women’s rights, empowerment and equal rights. Women’s rights activists presented 11 demands at the event organized by 50 organizations working on women’s rights.
Incidentally, Women’s Day has been celebrated in various countries since 1914. The United Nations recognized the day as Women’s Day in 1975. The main goal of celebrating Women’s Day is to achieve equal rights for women and men.
