Dhaka is gradually becoming a city of ever-growing air pollution. Air pollution increases every winter particularly, and the name of Dhaka often leads the list. A similar picture is emerging this winter too as Dhaka has remained in the top spot among the most polluted cities in the world.
The AQI, updated at 9:30 am today, Sunday, showed Dhaka’s air quality was 422. The level is considered ‘disastrous’ or ‘hazardous’ in terms of air quality.
Besides, Baghdad of Iraq has occupied the second position with an AQI score of 228, Hanoi of Vietnam third with a score of 223, and Delhi of India fourth with 204.
According to the data, an AQI score ranging from zero to 50 was considered good, 51 to 100 is moderate, while scores of 101 to 150 are considered unhealthy for sensitive groups. Scores ranging from 151 to 200 are considered unhealthy, a score between 201 and 300 is considered ‘very unhealthy’, and a score of 301 and above is considered ‘disastrous’ or ‘hazardous’.
Air pollution is a serious threat to health. It is toxic for all, irrespective of age. However, the most vulnerable targets of air pollution are children, the sick, the elderly and pregnant women.
Experts blame brick kilns, vehicle exhaust and construction site dust for air pollution in Dhaka. Air pollution increases the risk of breathing problems, coughing, lower respiratory tract infections and depression.
