Dhaka’s air poses a serious health risk today
The populous city of Dhaka tops the list of the world’s most polluted cities with hazardous air. As of 9:30 am on Monday, the city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) score was 301. According to the standard, which is considered ‘hazardous’.
An AQI score between 101 and 200 is considered ‘unhealthy’ for sensitive groups. An AQI score between 201 and 300 is considered ‘very unhealthy’ and an AQI between 301 and 400 is considered ‘hazardous’.
At the same time, Pakistan’s Lahore is in second place in the list of the world’s most polluted cities with a score of 243. Apart from this, India’s Delhi is in third place with a score of 204, another city of the country, Kolkata, is in fourth place with a score of 182 and Nepal’s capital Kathmandu is in fifth place with a score of 172.
In Bangladesh, AQI is determined based on 5 characteristics of pollution. They are particulate matter (PM10 and PM2.5), NO2, CO, SO2 and ozone (O3).
