Deaths from rectified spirit in Rangpur rise to 6
Two more people have died in Rangpur after consuming rectified spirit alcohol collected from a homeopathic pharmacy. This brings the total number of deaths in the last three days to 6. Several others are seriously ill, police said.
They are Abdul Malek, son of Mohir Uddin of Purba Shibpur village in Gopalpur union of Badarganj upazila, and Rashedul Islam, son of the late Mofazzal Hossain of Shyampur Bandar College Para in Rangpur Sadar upazila. Their bodies were recovered at midnight on Tuesday (January 13) and sent to Rangpur Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
Several people fell ill after consuming rectified spirit alcohol at the house of identified drug dealer Zainul Abedin in Shyampurhat area of Badarganj upazila on Sunday (January 11) midnight. Alamgir Hossain, son of Amirul Islam of Basantpur village of Gopalpur union of Badarganj upazila, Sohel Mia, son of deceased Rafiqul Islam of Purba Shibpur village, and Jennad Ali (35) of Sahapur village of Sadar upazila died on the spot. Several others fell ill and are receiving treatment secretly at different places.
In addition, another person died in the hospital in a similar incident.
Azad Rahman, OC of Hazirhat police station of Rangpur Metropolitan Police, told us that Manik Chandra Roy (60), son of deceased Anil Chandra Roy of Shiber Bazar Paschim Hindupara of Sadar Kotwali police station, fell ill after drinking alcohol at Balarbazar of Hazirhat police station of the city last Monday evening. He died while undergoing treatment at Rangpur Medical College Hospital yesterday afternoon.
The OC also said that several others fell ill and are receiving treatment secretly at different places. Drug dealer Joynal Abedin has been arrested at this time. Two separate cases have been filed in this incident at Badarganj and Hazirhat police stations. 10 bottles of rectified spirit were recovered.
Rangpur Superintendent of Police Marufat Hossain said, the drug dealers procured the medicines from a local homeopathic chamber. The Detective Police and Narcotics Control Department also conducted a raid on a homeopathic chamber in the city. We have received some information. The raid is ongoing.
