Darwin devastated by powerful cyclone ‘Fina’

Tropical cyclone ‘Fina’ has hit the capital of Australia’s northern territory, closing the city’s international airport. Winds were recorded at 205 kilometers per hour. The Australian Bureau of Meteorology reported this information on Sunday (November 23). Reuters reported. It said that the Category-3 cyclone recorded winds of up to 205 kilometers per hour. After passing over Darwin on Saturday night, the storm is slowly moving away from the city today.
For about 1,40,000 residents, Cyclone Fina has brought back memories of the devastating Cyclone Tracy that hit on Christmas Day in 1974, which destroyed much of the city and killed 66 people. Darwin International Airport said that flights would resume when conditions normalize. Warnings are in place as strong winds and heavy rain continue.
Emergency service SecureNT has advised residents to avoid areas with downed power lines and warned that it is not safe to venture outside. The state-run Electricity and Water Corporation said it was not yet possible to determine how many people were without power. Damage assessments were underway this morning.
The storm caused damage to homes and infrastructure, but no serious injuries, ABC News reported. According to the Bureau of Meteorology, Category 3 cyclones typically cause extensive damage to trees, crops and vulnerable structures, and disrupt power supplies. Cyclone Alfred previously hit Queensland in March this year, causing widespread power outages.
