Culvert breaks in two in Chittagong due to waterlogging

A culvert built 45 years ago in Chittagong collapsed due to waterlogging due to continuous rain since Wednesday night (August 6). This culvert, built over the Shitaljharna canal on Bayezid Bostami Road in the city’s Starship area, collapsed on Thursday morning (August 7). This culvert was used to travel from Gate No. 2 to the Oxygen Intersection area of the city. Due to its collapse, communication on one side of the four-lane road has been cut off. The common people have been suffering. Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) Mayor Dr. Shahadat Hossain has announced that the construction of the culvert will start on a larger scale after 10-15 days. He claimed that the CCC had planned to rebuild the culvert. The work would be started after the monsoon. A grant of around Tk 8-9 crore was given for this. Meanwhile, heavy rains in Chittagong over the past few days have caused waterlogging in Rahattarpul, Bahaddarhat, GEC, Muradpur, Agrabad, Chawkbazar and Ekala. Houses and shops in these areas have been submerged in water.
