Crane collapses on moving train in Thailand, killing 22
A construction crane collapsed on a moving train in northeastern Thailand, killing 22 people. Police have confirmed that 22 people have been killed and 79 injured. Authorities said eight of the injured were in critical condition. BBC News.
The accident occurred at around 9am local time on Wednesday (January 14) in the Ban Thanon Khot area of Si Khiao district in Nakhon Ratchasima province. A large construction crane collapsed on a train travelling from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani province. As a result, one of the train carriages derailed and caught fire for a short time.
Local police said that 22 bodies have been recovered from the scene so far. It is feared that more passengers may have died in the burning carriage. The death toll could rise as rescue operations are ongoing. Nakhon Ratchasima Police Superintendent Thachapon Chinnawong said the crane collapsed during construction work on the high-speed rail line and hit the moving train.
The accident occurred on a high-speed rail project from the Laos border to Bangkok. Rescue teams arrived at the scene shortly after the accident and are trying to rescue passengers trapped in the damaged carriage. Local media reported that several people were injured in the incident. Authorities have launched an investigation to bring the situation under control and determine the exact number of casualties.
