Congo virus kills 6, everyone should be careful
Six people have died of Sindh Congo virus in Pakistan’s Sindh province this year. Five of the dead are residents of Karachi.
This information was reported by Geo News in a report on Friday (September 26).
The latest person to lose his life to the virus is a 28-year-old butcher. He was suffering from Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF).
The management of Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre (JPMC) said that the man was admitted to the hospital two days ago with fever and severe abdominal pain. His laboratory tests confirmed that he had Congo virus last (Friday) morning. Despite the efforts of doctors, his condition deteriorated and he finally died.
The Sindh Health Department said that five deaths were reported from Malir district of Karachi and one from Thatta. Of these, two died in June, one each in July, August and September.
According to the hospital authorities, the deceased was a butcher by profession. He probably came in contact with infected animals, which is the main source of Congo virus infection.
In early June, a 26-year-old man from Karachi and a 42-year-old man from Malir died of Congo virus.
Congo virus is usually spread through tick bites or contact with the blood and tissue of infected animals, especially during slaughter. No vaccine has been discovered for the disease yet.
Doctors have asked people involved in slaughtering and caring for animals to be especially careful. Wearing gloves and protective clothing has been advised for protection.
