Confederation Secretary General Resigns Over Afcon Trophy Controversy

Finally, the Secretary General of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Veron Mosengo-Omba, has resigned amid controversies and allegations of corruption. The CAF Secretary General has finally resigned under pressure and criticism. He was cornered on multiple issues, including the controversial title being stripped from Senegal. Although he claimed his resignation as retirement, the reality is different.
The continent’s football scene has been in turmoil since Senegal was stripped of the title and Morocco was declared champions after being accused of leaving the field in the Afcon final last January. In addition, members of the executive committee themselves have raised questions about corruption allegations and remaining in office after reaching the age of 63.
Although Mosengo-Omba claimed innocence in his farewell statement, the football world is now looking to CAS or the International Court of Justice to resolve the crisis. However, President Patrice Motsepe said that CAF would take into account the court’s final decision on Senegal’s appeal.
