Chief Election Commissioner and Commissioners to take oath today

The newly appointed Election Commission is going to take office today. The Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and four Election Commissioners (EC) will take oath at 1:30 pm.

Chief Justice Dr. Syed Refaat Ahmed will administer their oath at the Judges Lounge of the Supreme Court. Through this, the new Election Commission will begin its journey in the changed context of the country. The Commission faces various challenges. Especially, updating the voter list; restoring the culture of people to vote; creating confidence in the vote among political parties; obtaining cooperation from the administration free from party influence; creating a festive atmosphere free from anxiety and fear; holding a free and fair election with the participation of all registered political parties and achieving acceptance by the international community will be one of the challenges of the new Election Commission.

It is learned that after taking the oath, the Chief Election Commissioner and four Commissioners will go directly to the Agargaon Election Commission building. There, they will sit in their offices and exchange views with the concerned officials. After that, he will also talk to the media personnel present. All political parties and the common people expect that the newly appointed CEC AMM Nasir Uddin will erase the stigma left by his predecessors and show the nation the path of light. There is a lot of controversy about the last three national parliamentary elections. The responsibility of alleviating the regret of young voters about not being able to vote lies on the shoulders of the commission led by him.

In the past, questions about participatory elections were raised when BNP and its allied parties boycotted the elections. This time, the interim government is moving towards the national elections in a new context. Since the uprising of the students and the public on August 5, the Awami League can be said to be in exile in a sense.

There are various arguments about whether this party, led by Sheikh Hasina, who resigned from the post of Prime Minister and fled to India, will participate in the elections before the next elections. The government has also said at various times that there is no opportunity to participate in the elections until the trial of criminals is over. Holding elections above the controversy in this regard is also a challenge for the new commission.

On the other hand, the current interim government has dissolved the city corporation, municipality, district council and upazila council after taking office. As a result, the entire local government system has collapsed. Therefore, there has been discussion from various quarters about whether local government elections will be held before the national elections. However, whichever elections are held, the current Election Commission will have to update the voter list.

Preparations for the Election Commission Secretariat Complete

An officer has been appointed from the Election Commission Secretariat for the Chief Election Commissioner and the Commissioners to take the CEC and other Commissioners to the oath-taking ceremony and from there to their offices in the Agargaon Election Commission building. They will take the Chief Election Commissioner and Commissioners from their residences to the Supreme Court; and again take them to the Agargaon Election Building with a protocol. They will introduce everyone there.

The four newly appointed Election Commissioners are former Additional Secretary Anwarul Islam Sarkar, retired District and Sessions Judge Abdur Rahmanel Masud, former Joint Secretary Begum Tahmida Ahmed and Brigadier General (Retd) Abul Fazal Md. Sanaullah.
