    Cold wave coming in waves

    The Meteorological Department has forecast a few cold waves this month over the several divisions of the country. This time the cold will be more severe throughout January compared to the last few times. The temperature may drop up to 6 degrees Celsius.

    According to Meteorologist Abul Kalam Mallick, “There might be one to three mild to moderate and one to two severe cold waves in January. Though the temperature has fallen from Tuesday, the severity of cold will increase from Wednesday in Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka, Khulna, and Sylhet divisions. It may slowly spread through the central part towards the eastern part.”

    He said, “The extent of fog is also likely to increase in the next few days. The effect of cold winds will also continue to increase. The feeling of cold will be more throughout the month.”

    If the minimum temperature falls below 6 degrees Celsius over a vast area, it is termed a severe cold wave; if it falls between 6 and 8 degrees, it is termed moderate, and if it falls between 8 and 10 degrees Celsius, it is termed a mild cold wave.

    The country’s minimum temperature in Tentulia of Panchagarh district was recorded at 10.9 degree Celsius on Tuesday. However, maximum 30.5 degree Celsius was recorded both in Cox’s Bazar and Sitakunda of Chittagong region.

    In the regular weather bulletin on Tuesday, Met Office said, “Weather may remain dry with temporary partly cloudy sky over the country during the day on Wednesday. Moderate to dense fog may occur over the country during late night to noon.”. Air traffic, inland river transport and road communication may be temporarily disrupted due to dense fog. Night and day temperatures of the country may decrease by 1-2 degrees Celsius. Due to dense fog, the feeling of cold may increase. However, the temperature may increase slightly in the next five days.
