Clean-up drive begins at Paris Canal in Mirpur
State Minister for Youth and Sports Md. Aminul Haque inaugurated a clean-up drive at Paris Canal in Pallabi area of Mirpur. He inaugurated the drive at around 11 am today, Monday (March 2). Dhaka North City Corporation Administrator Shafiqul Islam Milton was present at the time. He said that excavation work is not possible right now as there are illegal settlements on both sides of the canal. The excavation work of the canal will start after discussions with the locals after Eid.
Aminul Haque said that the Paris Canal is disappearing due to illegal encroachment. As a result, a large part of Mirpur is waterlogged. Preservation of the canal is a priority of the current government. However, the residents of the canal banks said that they have been living there for a long time. If evicted without rehabilitation, they will have to take ‘space’ under the open sky.
