Clash between two factions of Jubo Dal in Chittagong, 1 dead
A young man named Sajjad (22) was killed and 15 others were injured in a clash and gunfight between two factions of Jubo Dal in the Baklia area of Chittagong city. The incident took place at around 2 am on Monday (October 27) in the Bogar Bilmukh area of Baklia Access Road.
Police and party sources said that the clash between the two factions started over the tearing of banners. The deceased Sajjad was a follower of Emdadul Haque Badsha, the expelled organizing secretary of the defunct committee of the Nagar Jubo Dal. The other faction was a follower of former Nagar Chhatra Dal president Gazi Siraj Ullah.
Baklia Police Station OC Ikhtiyar Uddin told us that the incident started over the tearing of banners. One person was killed and several others were injured in the shooting. A drive is underway to arrest those involved in the incident. Party sources said that at night, Siraj’s followers Borhan Uddin and Nazrul Islam Sohel Emdadul’s followers Jubo Dal activists took Jasim away. Tensions flared between the two parties over this.
Jasim told reporters that Chittagong City Corporation Mayor and former city BNP president Shahadat Hossain had ordered the removal of the ‘terrorist-extortionist’ banner that had been put up using his picture. I have removed the banners. Among them were the banners of Borhan along with the pictures of Shahadat and Siraj. Angered by this, the Borhans took me away and beat me up.
When news of Jasim’s arrest spread, Emdadul’s followers went to rescue him, an exchange of gunfire broke out between the two sides. At that time, Sajjad was shot. Later, when he was taken to the hospital, the doctor declared him dead.
Emdadul Haque Badsha said, “The Borhans took Jasim away when the banner was removed on the orders of Mayor Shahadat. Later, when we went to release them, they opened fire. Farida Begum, the mother of the deceased Sajjad, said, “Why did you shoot my son? I want his killers to be brought to justice.” The deceased’s brother Mohammad Imran said, “My brother was involved in Chhatra Dal politics. I want his killers to be hanged.”
