China’s message on Bangladesh elections

Chinese Ambassador to Dhaka Yao Wen has said that the upcoming general elections in Bangladesh are an internal matter of the country. He said that China always follows the policy of non-interference in the internal affairs of other countries. He expressed hope that Bangladesh will be able to conduct the general elections peacefully and fairly. He made the remarks during a meeting between the Chinese Ambassador and BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman at the BNP Chairperson’s office in Gulshan in the capital on Wednesday afternoon (January 7).
A statement later published on the Chinese Embassy’s Facebook page informed about the meeting. During the meeting, the two sides exchanged views on various important issues, including China-Bangladesh bilateral relations, party-to-party cooperation and the recent political context. During the meeting, Ambassador Yao Wen expressed deep condolences over the death of BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia. He said that China and Bangladesh are comprehensive strategic cooperative partners.
The statement said that since the establishment of diplomatic relations, the two countries have maintained relations based on mutual respect, equality and cooperation, which is an example in international relations. The ambassador also noted that the Communist Party of China and the BNP have long-standing friendly relations. China is ready to strengthen exchanges and cooperation with the BNP in the future and is eager to take China-Bangladesh friendship to a new height. During the meeting, Tarique Rahman reiterated BNP’s firm commitment to the one-China policy. He expressed gratitude for China’s long-term support for Bangladesh’s development and said that China is a faithful friend and reliable partner of Bangladesh. He also said that BNP is committed to further strengthening the friendship and cooperation between China and Bangladesh for the benefit of the peoples of the two countries.
