Chief Advisor Wants New Economic Framework to Address Climate Crisis

Chief Advisor Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus said, “A new global economic framework is needed to address the climate crisis and build a new civilization that benefits the planet and humanity.”

The Chief Advisor said this at a high-level meeting of LDCs with UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Wednesday.

The meeting was held on the sidelines of the COP-29 conference in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. The leaders of five major climate-vulnerable least developed countries Nepal, Malawi, Gambia, Liberia and Bangladesh attended this closed-door meeting.

Muhammad Yunus said, “We need a new economic framework that will benefit the planet and humanity.” At the same time, he also supported the ‘Summit for the Future’ held under the auspices of the United Nations to build an economic system for the world’s youth.

He added, “We have created an economic structure that is based on consumption, consumption and consumption. It only produces waste, waste and waste. We need to build a zero waste world.”

The chief advisor said that the COP climate conference should not be held every year, “We know what the world needs and we should have a long-term plan for it. It should be country-specific. We need to have a long-term (waste) removal plan.”

Professor Muhammad Yunus said, “We do not need to gather here every year. Meeting every year for discussions is time-consuming, wasteful and humiliating.”

The chief advisor called for a new approach to climate talks, stating that the current approach has failed to meet most of the world’s needs.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said, “The least developed countries face the greatest injustice in terms of climate change. We want to tell you that we care about you. Least developed countries need to engage in robust discussions and develop a coherent process to mobilize a larger fund for climate adaptation and mitigation.’
