Chief Advisor inaugurates distribution of health cards to those injured in July Uprising.
Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, Chief Advisor to the Interim Government, inaugurated the health card distribution program of the Ministry of Health to ensure free medical services to those injured in the July Uprising in government hospitals across the country.
The programme was inaugurated at the State Guest House Jamuna on Wednesday evening. The Chief Advisor handed over health cards to two students injured in the uprising. They are Ifat Hossain, a student of Narsingdi United College, and Israt Jahan Emu, a student of the Disaster Management Department of Dhaka University.
Ifat lost the sight in both eyes in police firing in Narsingdi during the July 19 movement last year. She is not being able to see with one eye yet. Israt, severely injured during the attack of banned Chhatra League activists on female students in the Dhaka University area on July 15, is undergoing treatment at BSMMU. The Chief Advisor talked to both and asked about the medical services among other issues.
The Ministry of Health has promised that health cards will be distributed weekly in specific districts among fighters who were injured in the July uprising.
The Chief Advisor said, “The financial security of the families of martyrs and the injured in the uprising is not a thing to be worried about; it will be ensured, together with medical services.” He said this while telling of the responsibility of ensuring medical services to the injured being that of the state.
He further said, “We need to think of mental and social rehabilitation of fighters who got injured in July. This is something important. Necessary initiatives should be taken so that people can live their lives happily and be established in society.”
The medical activities were also apprised to the Chief Advisor by Professor Khair Ahmed Chowdhury, Director, National Institute of Ophthalmology. He said, “So far, 1,074 people received treatment at the Institute of Ophthalmology. Of them, 39 lost both eyes forever. About 450 people had one eye damaged.
About 650 operations have been performed on the Eye injuries, informed Professor Khair Ahmed Chowdhury. Of them, more than 300 were on retinal surgeries that were performed in the second phase. 60 patients were operated on in two hospitals outside the Institute of Ophthalmology. Some patients have needed operations in the third phase as well.
He said that so far, doctors from China, France, Nepal, and the United States have visited the Institute of Ophthalmology and the doctors have expressed satisfaction with the treatment being provided.
