Chief Adviser urges Malaysia to issue multiple-entry visas for Bangladeshis.

Chief Adviser to the interim government, Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus, has called for multiple-entry visas for Bangladeshi workers in Malaysia. He made the call when Malaysian High Commissioner Mohammad Shuhada Othman, who is working in Dhaka, called on the chief adviser on Monday.

During the meeting, the chief adviser urged Shuhada Othman to allow 18,000 workers who were unable to travel to Malaysia in May last year to return home.

The Malaysian High Commissioner said in this regard that a joint technical committee comprising officials from Malaysia and Bangladesh had held a meeting on the issue in Kuala Lumpur on December 31 and a similar meeting is planned for tomorrow, Tuesday.

Referring to Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim’s visit to Dhaka last October, Dr Muhammad Yunus expressed hope that Malaysia would complete the process quickly so that more workers could plan to travel to Malaysia in the future.

The Principal Advisor congratulated Malaysia on assuming the ASEAN Chairmanship on 1 January this year and sought Malaysia’s support for Bangladesh’s efforts to become a Sectoral Dialogue Partner of ASEAN and consequently a full member.

Dr. Yunus informed the Malaysian High Commissioner that Bangladesh seeks ASEAN’s support for the upcoming UN International Conference on the Rohingya Crisis in 2025, in accordance with UN General Assembly Resolution 79/182.

The Principal Advisor urged the High Commissioner to work towards further increasing Malaysian investment in Bangladesh and relocating Malaysian factories to Bangladesh to harness the youth potential of Bangladesh. “I hope that during your stay in Bangladesh, the relationship between the two countries will reach a new level of economic and business closeness,” he said.

Dr. Yunus said that Bangladesh is awaiting a convenient date from Malaysia to attend the fourth Bilateral Consultations (BCM) in Kuala Lumpur. He said Bangladesh is also ready to host the ‘Fifth Joint Commission’ meeting at the foreign ministerial level in Dhaka in mid-2025.
