Chhatra Dal leader takes charge without following rules
Muhammad Mehdi Hasan Munna, the co-promotion secretary of Sir A.F. Rahman Hall branch of Dhaka University, has taken a post in the committee of Dhaka University Band Society (DUBS), a socio-cultural organization based on TSC of Dhaka University (DU). An allegation has been made against Assistant Proctor Shehreen Amin Bhuiyan for aiding and abetting this.
It is learnt that the Chhatra League had been using DUBS in the past years. Various questions were raised regarding these issues. Then, a demand was raised that no political organization should be able to use DUBS in the future. For this purpose, a referendum was organized on January 9. In that referendum, 44 people voted that political persons should not be allowed to be on the committee and 10 voted that political persons should be allowed to be on the committee. In other words, after the referendum, it was unanimously decided that a person holding a position in a political organization should not be allowed to hold office.
However, in the committee published last Friday night, Muhammad Mehdi Hasan Munna, the co-promotion secretary of Sir A.F. Rahman Hall branch Chhatra Dal, was appointed as the ‘programme secretary’ of DUBS. He did not submit any resignation letter to DUBS. He was seen participating in various Chhatra Dal programs. He circulated the pictures of the programs on his Facebook. Even after knowing these issues, the moderator of the organization, Assistant Proctor Shehreen Amin Bhuiyan, did not take any action. Such a role of the moderator has created anger among other members of the organization.
After investigation, it was learned that even though the term mentioned in the pad of the Chhatra Dal hall committees formed in 2023 has expired, they are still politically active. Several leaders and activists of the hall committee said that their committees are active even though the term has expired. If someone wants to resign from the committee, they must submit a resignation letter. In addition, the committees are formed by forming a new hall committee or by holding a workers’ conference.
Regarding taking the position, Muhammad Mehdi Hasan Munna said, ‘The club wanted me to say – I do not have any political positions. Then I said – the official term of the committee is two years. And Tuku Bhai posted on Facebook, referring to my hall president as the former one. I will link these two. If you are satisfied with this, keep him in the committee. Otherwise, don’t keep him. Later, they will consider and keep me in the committee.’
The organization’s moderator, Assistant Proctor Shehrin Amin Bhuiyan, said that he was kept in the club’s committee considering his contribution to the club and the expiration of the hall committee. If he takes a political position later, he will no longer be able to remain in the club.
