Catherine Connolly wins Irish presidential election
Left-wing independent candidate Catherine Connolly has won the Irish presidential election with an absolute majority. Connolly, 68, defeated her opponent Heather Humphreys with 63 percent of the vote.
Voting was held in 43 seats last Friday (October 24). She was declared the winner on Saturday after counting. A coalition of left-wing opposition parties supported her in the election. In her inaugural speech in Dublin Castle, Connolly promised to listen to the people and work for them. Former lawyer Catherine Connolly became the third female president in Ireland’s history.
