    California is still burning.

The death toll from the devastating wildfires raging through Los Angeles, California, has risen to 10. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner announced a new death toll on Thursday night, which is double the previous number. They fear that the death toll could rise further. Firefighters have been working around the clock, but the fire has not yet been brought under control.

It was said that officials warned of a possible rise in the death toll as crews would then have to comb through the rubble once the fire gets put out. They said firefighting operations are continuing into the night; the winds were momentarily calm, making it easier to drop water from several helicopters.

US President Joe Biden, in a briefing from the White House, declared that federal aid has been provided with more funding allotments for California to fight against the fires. He further added that “it was the worst wildfire to hit Los Angeles in history.”

The president said this funding would be used to cover up to 180 days of temporary shelter costs, the cost for the removal of hazardous materials, salaries for emergency responders, and all other lifesaving measures.

Also speaking at the briefing was Vice President Kamala Harris, who as a senator represented California. Harris said what is happening in California is “apocalyptic, an event that will have repercussions for months and years to come.”

The vice president’s home is in an area being evacuated, but it was not immediately clear whether his home was damaged.

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said, “This is an unprecedented and historic fire.”

The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection says they have five active wildfires in the Los Angeles area, “The Palisades, Eaton, Hearst, Lydia and Sunset fires, with the Palisades and Eaton fires the largest.
