Bus hits expressway toll plaza, death 6.
In a bus crash that struck three cars at the Dhaleshwari toll plaza in South Keraniganj on the Dhaka-Mawa Expressway, another casualty, Reshma Akhtar, has died. Now, the death toll of the incident has risen to six.
The reckless passenger bus hit the motorcycle rider Suman Mia’s, 42, son Abdullah on the spot. His wife Reshma Begum died in the hospital on Friday evening while undergoing treatment.
Reshma’s father Malek Fakir said, “Reshma had left for Madaripur on a motorcycle with her husband and son from her home in Moghbazar to attend my younger daughter’s wedding.”
Belal Hossain, ward master of Sir Salimullah Medical College and Mitford Hospital in Old Dhaka, told the BBC, “Ten people were brought to their hospital in that road accident. Five of them died earlier.” Three of the five injured were treated at the hospital, while two were discharged after receiving first aid. Among the three, badly-injured Reshma was admitted to the National Orthopaedic Hospital and Rehabilitation Institute more commonly known as the Pangu Hospital. Then came the news that Reshma had died there’.
Fire Service and Highway Police sources said that several vehicles including private cars, microbuses, motorcycles, and others were waiting to pay toll in the Mawamukhi lane of the Dhaleshwari Toll Plaza around 11 am on Friday. At that time, a speeding Kuakata-bound Bepari Paribahan passenger bus lost control, crossed the toll plaza barrier, crushed a waiting private car, and hit several vehicles.
