A bus carrying miners fell into a ditch in Russia, killing 13 and injuring 20. The incident occurred in the eastern republic of Sakha (Yakutia) early on Monday (July 21). According to regional officials, the accident occurred at around 3:20 a.m. local time. The driver lost control of the vehicle, causing it to veer off the road and into a ditch about 25 meters (82 feet) deep. Photos released by the local interior ministry showed the bus overturned next to a muddy pond. The accident is believed to have occurred on an industrial road leading to the Denisovsky Mining and Processing Plant, which specializes in coal mining and production. Meanwhile, Russia’s Investigative Committee said it had opened a criminal investigation into possible negligence. Authorities have declared a day of mourning in the region on Tuesday over the incident.
