BNP ward leader shot dead in capital’s Panthapath

Shafiqul Islam, deputy general secretary of ward number 16 of Kalabagan police station in the capital, was shot dead. The incident took place at around 9 pm on Sunday (February 22) in the area adjacent to the gate of Kalabagan police station, opposite Bashundhara Shopping Complex. Immediately after the incident, BNP leaders and activists took the injured Shafiqul to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Doctors at the hospital’s emergency department gave him urgent treatment.
After receiving treatment at the hospital, the injured Shafiqul said that unknown terrorists carried out the incident as an obstacle to the efforts to make ward number 16 free from extortion. He said that while he was sitting in his shop, 10-15 terrorists came to his shop and demanded extortion from his shop. When he tried to stop him, a person opened fire on him. When he tried to block the bullets, he was shot in the hand.
