BNP Leader Files Case Against Former OC, SI, and Two Others in Shariatpur.

A case has been filed against a former officer-in-charge (OC) and a sub-inspector (SI) of Naria Police Station, along with two political leaders, for allegedly torturing and extorting money from a BNP leader four years ago.

The case was filed on Sunday by Matiur Rahman Sagar, Organizing Secretary of the BNP in Naria Upazila, in the Chief Judicial Magistrate Naria Amli Court. Taking cognizance of the complaint, Judge Md. Shakib Hossain ordered the Gopalganj Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) to conduct an inquiry and submit a report.

    The accused include:

    1. Abani Shankar Kar (55), former OC of Naria Police Station.
    2. Haider Ali (40), former SI of the station.
    3. Sujan Khan (45), a Jubo League leader from Sureshwar village.
    4. Faruk Khan (60), an Awami League leader from the same village.

The plaintiff, who was a BNP-endorsed chairman candidate in the 2021 Gharisar Union Parishad election, alleges a history of harassment and intimidation by the accused to suppress his political ambitions.

    According to the complaint:

    • In 2021, the plaintiff’s son, Zahid, was allegedly abducted along with Tk 3 lakh while returning home.
    • Zahid was later rescued by police after the plaintiff called emergency services. However, the accused filed a human trafficking case against Zahid and his father, confiscating Tk 1 lakh as part of the case.
    • The plaintiff claims he was subsequently extorted for an additional Tk 10 lakh in multiple stages.
    • He also alleges being forced to pay another Tk 2 lakh to settle the matter.

Matiur Rahman Sagar justified filing the case years later, stating, “For 17 years, there was no rule of law under the Awami League government. Speaking out against them could have cost me my life. Now that the country is independent and the rule of law has been restored, I have finally been able to file the case. With a fair investigation, I believe justice will be served.”

Former OC Abani Shankar Kar dismissed the allegations, stating, “A human trafficking case was filed against Matiur Rahman in 2021, and we submitted a charge sheet after investigation. Matiur Rahman had attempted to influence the case unsuccessfully, and now he is retaliating by filing this complaint.”

Attempts to contact the other accused individuals were unsuccessful.

Inspector Shimul of Shariatpur Court confirmed the case filing and said, “The court has directed the PBI to investigate. Once the investigation report is submitted, the court will decide how to proceed with the case.”

This development reflects ongoing political and legal tensions in the region, with allegations of past abuses now surfacing in a changing political landscape.
