BNP factions clash over Eidgah ground committee, 10 injured
A clash and office vandalism took place between two BNP factions over the formation of the Eidgah ground management committee in Banshpukuria area of Puthia upazila of Rajshahi. At least 10 people from both sides were injured in the incident. The clash took place last Friday (March 6) night over the management committee of the Banshpukuria Dakshinpara Eidgah ground. During the clash, a local BNP party office and a shop were vandalized and furniture was set on fire.
On Saturday (March 7), Belpukur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Mamunur Rashid confirmed this information. According to local sources, a dispute broke out between Abdul Wahed, a former member of Ward No. 1 of Belpukur Union and BNP supporter, and Md. Momin, the president of the same ward BNP, over the management committee of the Banshpukuria Dakshinpara Eidgah ground. A heated argument broke out between the two parties on this issue around 9 pm on Friday.
Earlier, at around 7:30 pm, when Momin’s nephew Khorshed and his son Joy reached Banshpukuria Bazar, Abdul Wahed Member, his brother Abu Saeed and his sons Joy and Sohan along with their supporters attacked them with country-made weapons. Khorshed and Joy suffered serious head injuries in the attack. Locals rescued them and rushed them to Puthia Upazila Health Complex, where the on-duty doctor sent them to Rajshahi Medical College (RMC) Hospital for better treatment. They are currently undergoing treatment at Ward No. 8 of Ramsey Hospital. The names and identities of the injured are not known. Meanwhile, when news of the attack spread, Momin’s supporters were enraged and attacked Banshpukuria Bazar in retaliation. Unable to find Wahed Member there, they vandalized his nephew Anisur Rahman’s pesticide shop and the BNP party office controlled by the Wahed Member group. The attackers brought various furniture from inside the office onto the road and set it on fire. Fire service personnel quickly reached the spot and brought the fire under control. Upon receiving the news of the incident, Belpukur Police Station quickly reached the spot and brought the situation under control. Currently, due to tension in the area, additional police have been deployed. In this regard, Belpukur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md. Mamunur Rashid told us, “Receiving information about the tension between the two factions of the local BNP over the formation of the Eidgah field committee, the police quickly went to the spot and brought the situation under control. Currently, additional police have been deployed in the area and the situation is under control of the police. Those injured in the incident are undergoing treatment at the hospital. Strict legal action will be taken against the culprits after the investigation is completed and after receiving the complaint.”
