Birthright to US citizenship revoked.
US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to end birthright US citizenship. However, he acknowledged that the order will go to court.
After his inauguration, Trump signed a series of executive orders in front of 20,000 supporters at the Capital One Arena in Washington. He later signed the order in the Oval Office at the White House.
According to a report by Voice of America, Trump first suspended 78 orders issued by former President Joe Biden. Biden issued these orders towards the end of his term, several of which were not implemented.
Meanwhile, Donald Trump declared a ‘national emergency’ on the US-Mexico border in the south of the country through an order.
In his immigration and citizenship order, Trump suspended the refugee resettlement program and terminated the right to American citizenship for people born in the United States.
In signing the order, Trump acknowledged that his order could face legal challenges, as birthright citizenship is guaranteed in the country’s constitution.
He said, “Birthright citizenship is absolutely ridiculous and I believe there is a good legal case for changing this provision.”
