Bengali nameplates at London stations!
Discussions have begun over the Bengali nameplate of the White Chapel Metro station in London, UK. Since 2022, the name of this station has been written in both Bengali and English. However, a British MP recently opposed it. He said, ‘Signage or nameplate should be in English only.’ The world’s richest man, Elon Musk, also took his side by retweeting the tweet.
Bengali signage was first added to the White Chapel tube station in 2022. Its main purpose was to recognize the outstanding contribution of the Bangladeshi community living in East London. The project is funded by Tower Hamlets Council. Many Bangladeshis have been living in White Chapel and the surrounding areas for a long time. According to various reports, it is home to the largest Bangladeshi community in the UK. The number of Bangladeshis in the area has been increasing significantly since the 1970s. Currently, many Bangladeshi families are living here permanently and are involved in business and commerce.
However, recently, controversy has arisen around the nameplate. UK MP Rupert Lowe directly opposed this, saying, “Signage should only be in English.” In a tweet, he said, “This is London. Station names should be in English, only in English.”
His comment quickly spread on social media and caused a huge reaction. Tesla founder Elon Musk has come out in support of this British MP. Elon Musk shared the post and wrote, “Yes.”
