Bangladesh is moving in the opposite direction in employment creation: Dr. Hossain Zillur Rahman
Former advisor to the caretaker government, Dr. Hossain Zillur Rahman, has commented that Bangladesh is moving in the opposite direction in employment creation. He also noted that the participation of women and youth in the labor market is decreasing at an alarming rate. The former advisor said this at a seminar by research organization Rapid on Sunday (November 30) morning.
Stating that there is more investment in low-productivity sectors in the country, he said that although production on paper has increased by about 10 percent in the last two decades, employment has decreased by 1.4 million. Although 45 percent of workers work in the agricultural sector, only 11 percent of the total domestic production comes from this sector. In addition, the number of workers in the garment sector, the country’s largest export sector, has remained stable at about 4 million.
On the other hand, researchers have said that cheap labor will not be sustainable in the era of artificial intelligence. Therefore, emphasis should be placed on educated youth and women-friendly job markets. Skilled manpower should be sent abroad. In addition, a separate plan must be made for agriculture.
