Ban lifted at midnight, fishermen waiting to catch hilsa
The ban on all types of fishing, including hilsa, in the rivers and streams associated with Abhayashram ends today at midnight on Sunday.
In order to protect mother-hilsa, a ban on all types of fishing including hilsa was issued from October 13 to November 3 in six shelters. After 22 days, fishermen are preparing to go down to the river with nets and boats to catch fish. After a long time, they hope to go down to the river and catch the desired fish.
At the last minute, thousands of fishermen of Rangabali in Patuakhali are preparing for hilsa hunting. At least 9,000 fishermen of Chandpur’s Matlab Uttar Upazila are prepared with various fishing equipment including nets and boats.
The fishermen of these areas say that the news of the infiltration of Indian fishermen by taking advantage of Bangladesh’s ban has not been heard much. As a result, fishermen hope to get fish as expected by going down to the river and sea.
And according to the experts, after breeding, the production of hilsa will increase if the jatka from the eggs is also protected in addition to protecting the hilsa eggs. The objective of the government will also be successful.
According to Upazila Fisheries Office sources, 7 lakh meters of nets have been recovered in the operation to protect Ma-Hilsha. 27 fishermen were arrested and five boats were seized. A case has been filed against the fishermen. Some have been sentenced again through mobile courts.
Meanwhile, the people concerned believe that more hilsa have arrived in Rajshahi’s Padma river during the breeding season than last year. Fisheries officials said they realized this while conducting raids in the river during the ban on hilsa fishing for the past 22 days. They are saying that the hilsa is now crossing the Godagari upazila of Rajshahi and passing through Shivganj of Chapainawabganj to the Indian area.
Rajshahi District Fisheries Officer Jahangir Alam told the media that more hilsa has arrived in the Padma river this year than last year. They found Hilsa in Godagari Upazila. Apart from this, there have been reports that hilsa is going through Shibganj in Chapainawabganj and to the Indian area of Padma river.
Chandpur District Fisheries Officer. Golam Mehedi Hasan said, “Hilsha is a sea fish. It rushes to fresh water at this time to spawn. The district and upazila task force has successfully implemented the ban of 22 days given by the government to protect the national resource Hilsa.
During the campaign, 40 kg of rice was provided to fishermen as food aid. As the hilsa conservation campaign was successful in the joint operation of district administration, police administration, coast guard and district task force, hilsa production will increase this year and public will be able to buy and eat hilsa.
The district and upazila task force arrested 372 fishermen for hunting hilsa in the sanctuary area of Padma and Meghna rivers in Chandpur in the last 21 days.
In the operation, 172 fishermen were arrested by the naval police and 200 fishermen were detained by the task force, said Farhana Akhter Ruma, Assistant Fisheries Officer of the Chandpur District Fisheries Officer’s Office.
Nearly 2 lakh fishermen of 7 upazilas of Bhola, who have been unemployed for 22 days, have already completed the repair of net-trawlers and trawlers’ engines and have made all preparations for fishing.
According to the information of the District Fisheries Department, in the last 21 days, nearly 4 hundred dishonest fishermen have been arrested by conducting 605 raids in the 190 km area of Meghna-Tetulia river in Bhola. Among the detainees, more than 350 fishermen have been fined by 124 mobile courts. And being minors, the rest of the fishermen have been released on bail. Besides, 19 lakh 60 meters of illegal current nets seized from them were burnt and destroyed.
District Fisheries Officer Biswajit Kumar Dev said that fishermen will go down to the river for fishing from midnight today. The water pressure in the river is high this year and there has been a lot of rain. Hopefully the fishermen will get plenty of fish when the ban is over and will be able to pay back their past dues.
