    Former Home Minister Babar was acquitted in the corruption case

    The High Court acquitted former Home Minister Lutfuzzaman Babar in the case filed by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on charges of concealment of wealth information and acquisition of wealth beyond known income. He was sentenced to eight years in this case. The High Court has also canceled this sentence.

    A single High Court bench of Justice Kamrul Hossain Mollah gave this judgment today on Wednesday. Advocate Mohammad Shishir Monir heard on behalf of Babar in the court.

    Earlier, on October 12, 2021, Lutfuzzaman Babar was sentenced to eight years in prison in a corruption case by Judge Md Shahidul Islam of Dhaka’s Special Judge Court-7. In the verdict, the court found Babar guilty under section 26 (2) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act-2004 and sentenced him to three years rigorous imprisonment and sentenced him to five years rigorous imprisonment under section 27 (1) of the same law.

    Apart from this, Babar was ordered to serve another three months without labor without paying a fine of Tk 10,000. However, it is mentioned in the judgment that the sentences of these two sections will run together. Babur later appealed against this verdict.

    Babar was arrested by coalition forces on 28 May 2007 during the then army-backed caretaker government. And since then, Babar is in jail in various cases.

    On January 13, 2008, a case was registered against him at Ramna police station for acquiring illegal wealth and concealing wealth information. The case was filed by ACC Assistant Director Mirza Zahidul Alam. After the investigation, on July 16 of that year, Deputy Assistant Director Rupak Kumar Saha submitted the charge sheet to the court.

    In the charge sheet, Babar is accused of having illegal assets worth 7 crore 5 lakh 91 thousand 896 taka. He submitted an asset account of Tk 6 crore 77 lakh 31 thousand 312 to ACC. On August 12 of the same year, the court ordered the trial to be started by framing charges against Babar.
