Awami League leader dies after falling ill in prison
Tangail Awami League leader Sultan Mia (55) has died after falling ill in prison. He was taken to Tangail Medical College Hospital after feeling chest pain in the district jail on Wednesday (November 26) night. He died while undergoing treatment. This information was confirmed by the district’s Muhammad Jahedul Alam on Thursday (November 27).
Sultan Mia is the son of the late Azmat Ali of Gorai Haripara village in Mirzapur upazila. He is also the former general secretary of Gorai Union Awami League (East) Ward No. 3. It is learnt that on August 4 last year, Himel of Lalbari village in Gorai Union was blinded in both eyes by police firing during an anti-discrimination student-public movement in front of Gorai Highway Police Station adjacent to Dhaka-Tangail Highway.
After the incident, Himel’s mother Nasima Begum filed a case in Tangail’s Senior Judicial Magistrate Mirzapur Amli Court, naming 100 people, including police, journalists and Awami League leaders, and making 400 to 500 unknown accused. On October 28, the police arrested Awami League leader Sultan Mia as an accused in the case. He was detained in Tangail District Jail for about a month. He died there last night. When I spoke to Mirzapur Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Muhammad Rashedul Islam, he said, “We have received information about the death of the accused in Tangail Jail. The jail authorities will hand over the body to the family members after completing the legal process.”
