19 leaders of Awami League and Chhatra League arrested.
One Awami League and 16 Chhatra League leaders have been arrested in Kushtia, Gazipur, Laxmipur and Tangail on various charges including assault and murder in the anti-discrimination student movement. Of these, 11 are Awami League and 5 are Chhatra League leaders. Correspondents’ news
Kushtia: Police have arrested a former Chhatra League leader in Kumarkhali after he posted a ‘Happy Birthday’ post on Facebook with an old photo on the occasion of the 77th founding anniversary of the banned organization Chhatra League. He was arrested from the Banyakandi area of Sadki Union of the upazila last Saturday night. His name is Jahangir Hasan. He is the former president of Kumarkhali Upazila Chhatra League. He is the son of the late Sadek Ali of Sadki Union of the upazila.
Kapasia (Gazipur): Banned Chhatra League leader Zahid Hasan was arrested from his house in Kapasia. He was arrested from Kashera of Tok Union of the upazila on Friday night. Zahid was sent to Gazipur jail last Saturday. Zahid Hasan is the son of Md. Jalal Uddin of Kashera village. He is the president of the Tok Union Committee of Chhatra League. There are allegations against him of harassing the common people through extortion, forcible entry and one-sided arbitration meetings by exerting influence during the previous government. In addition, information is also available about attacks led by Zahid during the student movement against discrimination.
Laxmipur: Awami League leader Abdul Khalek Badal was arrested in the case of killing four students including Sabbir Hossain during the student-public uprising in Laxmipur. Last Saturday night, the Mirpur Model Police Station in the capital arrested Badal. Later, he was handed over to the Laxmipur Sadar Police Station. Yesterday afternoon, the Sadar Model Police Station handed him over to the Laxmipur court. Badal is the former president of the Bhabaniganj Union Awami League.
Tangail: Police have arrested two Chhatra League leaders for holding a jhatika procession in Tangail on the occasion of the 77th founding anniversary of the banned organization Chhatra League. They were arrested last Saturday night. They are Ashiq Hasan Munna, the president of the Chhatra League of Ward No. 9 of Tangail Sadar Municipality, and Rahat, the joint general secretary.
Rajshahi: Police have arrested 10 local Awami League leaders and activists on charges of writing the slogan ‘Joy Bangla’ on walls in various areas including Bagmara Upazila Sadar. They were detained in a drive conducted in various areas of the upazila on Saturday (January 4) night. They are: Tea shop owner Mokshed Ali, former member of Baro Bihanali Union Parishad and joint general secretary of Union Awami League Abu Bakkar, Awami League worker Jahangir Alam, Sreepur Union Awami League ward 9 president Sheikh Faridul Ripon, joint convener of Union Jubo League Alamgir Hossain, member of ward 4 of Maria Union Parishad Kamal Hossain, general secretary of Hamirkutsa Union Jubo League Rajimul Haque alias Rico, organizing secretary of Ward 6 of Taherpur Municipality Awami League Ali Hossain, Shuvodanga Union Jubo League member Sharif Mahmud and Jhikra Jubo League member Jahangir Alam.
Dinajpur: Immigration police detained a passport passenger named Shahazada yesterday afternoon while he was going to India through Hili Immigration Checkpost in Hakimpur. Later, the immigration police handed him over to Hakimpur Police Station. There is a sabotage case against him at Syedpur Police Station.
