Attorney General announces resignation from election candidacy
Md. Asaduzzaman Attorney General has announced his resignation and will contest the upcoming 13th National Parliament election. He said, ‘I have sought nomination from Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP). I am hopeful that I will get the nomination.’
He made this comment at a press conference in the conference room of the Attorney General’s Office on Wednesday (November 5) after hearing the appeal to reinstate the caretaker government. Stating that he is still the Attorney General, Md. Asaduzzaman said, ‘I will vote for leaving my Attorney General post. I will do it when the time comes.’ At that time, he said, he has sought BNP’s nomination from Jhenaidah-1 constituency.
At the press conference, the Attorney General made explosive comments on the abolition of the caretaker government system and the activities of former Chief Justice ABM Khairul Haque. He alleged that the verdict to abolish the caretaker government system was given to benefit a specific political party.
Asaduzzaman said, “The fact that he changed the verdict after the verdict was announced is a crime under Section 219 of the Penal Code. The verdict to abolish the caretaker government was given to benefit a specific party.” He also said that the verdict given by the Appellate Division will be an example for future generations and the country’s democracy.
It is worth noting that on Monday (November 3) evening, the party’s Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir announced the names of potential candidates for 237 seats at the BNP Chairperson’s political office in Gulshan (nomination for one seat was postponed the next day). Of the four seats in Jhenaidah, only the names of the candidates for Jhenaidah-3 were announced that day. The names of the candidates for the remaining three seats were not announced. It is learned that BNP has reserved the Jhenaidah-1 seat for the Attorney General and the Jhenaidah-2 seat for Muhammad Rashed Khan, General Secretary of the People’s Rights Council.
