Attempted to kill old man after not receiving extortion money in Narayanganj

A miscreant hacked and shot an old man named Shamsuddaha to death after not receiving extortion money in Rupganj, Narayanganj. The incident took place in the Karnagop area of Tarabo Municipality of the upazila on Monday (July 28) night. The injured Shamsuddaha is the son of Peer Ali of the Karnagop area of Shamsuddoha upazila. He owns several lands and houses in the area. He runs his family’s expenses with the income from house rent. Locals and relatives said that Shafiq, former joint general secretary of the district Chhatra Dal and current Jubo Dal leader, has been in a long-standing dispute with Shamsuddoha and his nephew Ripon over the dominance of the Karnagop area. A case is also pending in court between the two parties over a previous fight. Relatives allege that a few days ago, Jubo Dal leader Shafiq demanded a ransom of five lakh taka from the elderly Shamsuddoha. Shamsuddoha was threatened in various ways for not paying the ransom. On Monday (July 28) night, Shafiq and his men attacked Shasuddoha on his way home from Karnagop Bazar. They injured him by slashing him with sharp weapons. At one point, the attackers opened fire on the elderly Shamsuddoha’s legs. At that time, the attackers fled when people around arrived. Later, the bullet-injured Shamsuddoha was rescued and admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. His condition is currently reported to be critical. In this regard, Rupganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Tariqul Islam said, “There is a previous dispute between the two parties and a case is also ongoing. On receiving information about the attack on Monday night, the police went to the spot and recovered a bullet shell from there. The victim told us that he was stabbed and shot in the leg. However, we are not sure whether he was shot. We are in constant contact with the victim’s family.’ The OC also said, ‘No one has filed a written complaint in this incident so far. If a complaint is received, the case will be accepted and appropriate legal action will be taken.’
