Attempted attack on AC Land and Fisheries officer during operation
Damudya Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Gosairhat Upazila Fisheries officer were attacked by fishermen while on an operation to protect mother Hilsa in Gosairhat of Shariatpur. Later, they were able to escape from there.
This incident took place at around 12 noon today (October 14) at the entrance of Mustafa Dhali Canal, a tributary of the Meghna River, in the Char Jalalpur area of Alaulpur Union of the upazila.
The Upazila Fisheries Department said that for several days, some unscrupulous fishermen and traders had been catching and selling Hilsa fish in the river in the Char Jalalpur area, violating the ban during the breeding season of mother Hilsa.
This Tuesday morning, Damudya Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) Tariqul Islam and Gosairhat Upazila Fisheries officer Abul Kashem Nirav conducted a raid in the area based on confidential information. At that time, the traders took the fish in a trawler and entered the Mostafa Dhali Canal, a tributary of the Meghna River, and removed the fish.
Later, when the administration and the Fisheries Department seized the trawler and brought it back, the traders tried to attack them. Seeing that the situation was getting worse, the Upazila Assistant Commissioner (Land) and the Gosairhat Upazila Fisheries Officer tactfully left there.
In this regard, Gosairhat Upazila Senior Fisheries Officer Abul Kashem Nirav said, “An organized gang was selling fish in the Char Jalalpur area, violating the ban on fishing in the Meghna. After coming to know about the matter, we conducted a raid there. However, they realized it and removed the fish. Later, when we seized the trawler and returned, several people tried to attack us. However, we tactfully took the trawler and left there.”
