Attempt to burn body after killing expatriate, wife arrested
A sensational incident has taken place in Dhaka’s Nawabganj upazila where an expatriate was brutally killed and his body was burned. The murder took place in the Nayanagar area of Bandura union of the upazila between 7 pm and 8 pm on Sunday (October 5).
The deceased has been identified as Jewel (35). He is the son of the deceased Azhar and Laila of Nayanagar village.
Police and local sources said that Jewel, who had been abroad for a long time, recently returned to the country. Since his return, there had been a family dispute with his wife Jhuma Begum (25). It is alleged that Jhuma Begum and some unidentified associates planned to hang Jewel to death on Saturday evening (October 4). Later, an attempt was made to set the house on fire to hide the evidence of the murder. Neighbors came forward and informed the Nawabganj police station after smelling smoke and fire. On receiving the information, the police quickly reached the spot, brought the fire under control and recovered the body of the deceased. Based on the initial complaint, the police arrested the accused wife Jhuma Begum and took her to the police station.
The arrested Jhuma Begum is the daughter of Jahangir Alam of Puran Twittal village in Nayanshri union of the upazila. She was married to the deceased Jewel about eight years ago.
Residents of the Nayanagar area said that Jewel was a calm, hardworking and polite person. After working hard abroad, he was trying to start a new life after returning home. Such a tragic murder has cast a shadow of grief and anger in the area. The attempt to destroy evidence by burning the body has created panic and anger among the locals. They have quickly demanded exemplary punishment for the culprits.
Nawabganj Police Station OC Mominul Islam told us that the incident is initially believed to be a planned murder. The wife of the deceased has been arrested and interrogation is underway. Initial investigation revealed that the murder took place due to a family dispute. He further said that the body of the deceased has been recovered and sent to Sir Salimullah Medical College Morgue in Dhaka for autopsy. A drive is underway to identify and arrest others involved in the incident. Primary evidence has been collected and the police are working to unravel the mystery of the case based on the testimony of neighbors, including digital forensics.
