    Arakan Army has captured 20 fishermen from Naf river

    Members of the Arakan Army, a pro-independence armed group of Myanmar, captured 20 fishermen along with 15 dinghy boats going to fish in the Naf River of Teknaf, Cox’s Bazar. They were picked up from an area near Naf river and Bay of Bengal estuary around 4:30 pm on Tuesday.

    Abdus Salam, UP member of Sabrang Union in Teknaf, confirmed the matter. He said that these 20 fishermen were caught while fishing in the estuary with two engine-powered boats and 13 non-engine boats. They catch fish with small nets, one or two in each boat. Members of the Arakan Army arrived in large trawlers and took them away at gunpoint.

    This UP member said that the arrested fishermen’s house is in Jaliapara of Shahapari Island in Sabarang Union of Teknaf. However, he could not confirm the identity of all.

    Teknaf upazila executive officer (UNO) said. Adnan Chowdhury said that the matter was reported by local UP members. Concerned authorities have been informed.

    In this regard, the commander of Teknaf-2 BGB Lt. Col. Mohiuddin Ahmed said that he came to know about the matter through local people and families. The matter is being contacted with the Myanmar authorities.
