    Apex Group Chairman Syed Manzur Elahi is no more

    Prominent businessman, Apex Group Chairman and former caretaker government advisor Syed Manzur Elahi has passed away (Inna lillahi wa inna ilaihi rajiun). He died at 7:31 am Bangladesh time today, Wednesday, while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Singapore.

    He was 79 years old at the time of his death. It is known that he had been suffering from various old-age related diseases for some time.

    The death was confirmed by the deceased’s son Syed Nasim Manzur . He said over the phone from Singapore that he and his sister were by his father’s bedside until his death. They are trying to bring his father’s body to the country by Wednesday.

    Syed Manzur Elahi, besides being the chairman of Apex Group, served as the founding chairman of Mutual Trust Bank and Grey Advertising Bangladesh. He was an advisor to the caretaker government in 1996 and 2001. In 1996, he was the Minister of Communications, Shipping, Civil Aviation; He served as an advisor to the ministries of tourism, posts and telecommunications, and housing and public works.

    Born in Kolkata on February 26, 1942, Manzur Elahi graduated from St. Xavier’s College, Kolkata. Later, he completed his master’s degree in economics from Dhaka University.

    Syed Manzur Elahi is a unique figure in the entrepreneurial world of Bangladesh. He has led various business organizations and has received various recognitions, including the ‘DHL-The Daily Star’ Lifetime Achievement Award.

    Syed Manzur Elahi, who left his job in a multinational company to join the leather business, was a successful businessman in the leather sector. It was through his hands that the export of leather shoes produced in Bangladesh began. Along with exports, his company Apex is also one of the leading companies in the country’s shoe market.

    Syed Manzur Elahi started the business of selling leather on a commission basis by forming a company called Manzoor Industries in 1972. Four years later, in 1976, he purchased the state-owned Orient Tannery for Tk 1.222 million and established Apex Tannery. Apex Footwear, which started its journey 14 years later, is now the country’s leading shoe exporter.
