    1948 – Kent Bernadotte, United Nations mediator on the Arab-Israeli conflict and the Palestine crisis, is killed by Zionists in the Jewish quarter of Baitul Moqaddas.
    1962 – Student movement and hartal was held in East Bengal against the report of anti-people Hamudur Rahman Education Commission.
    1963 – A resolution raised by 17 countries, including the United States and the Soviet Union, participating in the Geneva Conference on Disarmament was approved by the plenary session of the United Nations General Assembly. The resolution called for all countries not to deploy nuclear weapons or any other weapons of mass destruction in Earth’s orbit.
    1972 – Honduras recognized Bangladesh as an independent country.
    1974 – Bangladesh, Grenada and Guinea-Bissau join the United Nations.
    1980 – Former Nicaraguan President Anastosio Samoza Devailly is assassinated in Paraguay.
    1983 – Vanessa Williams becomes the first black Miss American.
    1988 – The 24th Olympic Games opened in Seoul with 160 countries participating.
    1989 – A major earthquake struck northern California, USA. Many roads and bridges were destroyed in this earthquake. At least 271 people died in this earthquake. Apart from that, at least 500 people were injured in the affected area.
    1991 – The first version (Version 0.01) of the open source computer operating system Linux kernel is released on the Internet.
    1991 – Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, North and South Korea, Micronesia become members of the United Nations.
    1994 – A Chinese Han Dynasty tomb museum is discovered in Chioho Ancient City, Xinjiang, China.
    2005 – Commenced commercial extraction of coal from Barapukuria coal mine in the country.
