Al-Azhar University in Egypt is a glorious institution – Sufi Mohammad Mizanur Rahman

Tomorrow marks the 1085th anniversary of the founding of Al-Azhar University in Egypt. There are some institutions in the history of human civilization that are not just buildings made of bricks and stones – but living symbols of knowledge, wisdom and moral leadership. Al-Azhar University in Egypt is one such glorious institution, whose 1085-year glorious journey has written a unique chapter in the intellectual and spiritual history of world humanity.
Since its establishment in 970 AD, Al-Azhar University has continuously developed as a center of Islamic education, research and thought. It is not just a university; rather, it is a solid foundation for the unity, moderation and balanced thinking of the Muslim Ummah. Al-Azhar has maintained its fundamental ideals of knowledge, tolerance and justice throughout the ages, despite political upheavals, social transformations and global challenges.
At the heart of Al-Azhar’s educational philosophy is ‘Wasatiyah’ – the ideal of balance and moderation. Allah Almighty says in the Holy Quran: O Muslims, thus have I made you a moderate nation, that you may be witnesses to mankind, and (My most honored) Messenger (peace be upon him) will be a witness to you. (Al-Baqarah: 143)

This philosophy guides human society towards coexistence, mutual respect and constructive dialogue instead of extremism and division. History bears witness that countless scholars, jurists, thinkers and reformers who learned from Al-Azhar have dedicated themselves to spreading the light of knowledge worldwide and to the welfare of humanity.
At a time when the world is currently facing division, extremism and a crisis of values, the role of Al-Azhar is even more significant. Under the visionary and wise leadership of the Honorable Grand Imam, Professor Dr. Ahmad Muhammad Ahmad At-Tayyeb Hafizullah, Al-Azhar is today a strong voice for peace, interfaith harmony and human coexistence on the world stage. Its clear stance against extremism and violence and its initiative to strengthen dialogue among civilizations are appreciated worldwide.
Honorable graduates of Al-Azhar in various countries of the world, including Bangladesh, continue to carry the glorious legacy of this great institution through education, research, social leadership and moral guidance. The World Organization for Al-Azhar Graduates – Bangladesh Branch is proud to be a part of this tradition and is committed to establishing Al-Azhar’s universal message of knowledge, humanity and responsible leadership in society.
On this historic anniversary, we pray to Almighty Allah to uphold Al-Azhar Sharif as a beacon of knowledge and guidance until the Day of Judgment; to grant its leadership strength, wisdom and success; and to enrich and expand its contribution to the welfare of world humanity. Long live Al-Azhar. May this glorious legacy of knowledge, justice, peace and humanity remain unfading forever.
