Chief Advisor Dr. Yunus Departs for Egypt to Attend D-8 Summit
Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus left Dhaka at 1 a.m. yesterday to attend the 11th D-8 Summit in Cairo, Egypt. The announcement was made by Deputy Press Secretary to the Chief Advisor, Abul Kalam Azad Majumder, during a briefing at the Foreign Service Academy in Dhaka. The briefing was also attended by Chief Advisor Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam and Senior Assistant Press Secretary Faiz Ahmed.
Azad Majumder shared that the theme of this year’s summit is “Investing in Youth and Supporting Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs): Shaping Tomorrow’s Economy.” He emphasized that this theme is especially significant for Bangladesh, as the discussions will focus on youth development and Bangladesh’s role in the MSME sector, which is a key driver for future economic growth.
The D-8 Organization for Economic Cooperation, also known as the Developing-8, aims to foster economic cooperation among its member countries—Bangladesh, Egypt, Indonesia, Iran, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Turkey.
Notable leaders attending the summit include Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto, Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, and Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi.
During the summit, Dr. Yunus is expected to hold a bilateral meeting with Pakistani Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif. The summit will focus on critical issues such as youth empowerment and the vital role of SMEs in shaping the economies of D-8 member countries.
