9 students of DU and private universities arrested with drugs.
The university’s proctorial team arrested 9 students for consuming drugs in an overnight raid at Jahangirnagar University (JU) on the 31st night. The proctorial team and security guards arrested them from the Sundarbans area near the university’s science factory at 1 am yesterday, Tuesday. At that time, drugs were found with the students and many of them confessed to the administration that they were consuming drugs.
Earlier, on Monday, the university issued a notice instructing all students of the university to return to their respective halls by 10 pm on the night of December 31 to avoid all kinds of unpleasant incidents and maintain discipline on the university campus. Later, the proctorial team immediately went there after watching CCTV footage at various points of the university overnight and conducted a raid.
The list of students arrested in the raid includes Md. Shipon Hossain, Satirtha Biswas Badhan, Priyanti Nag, students of the 2022-23 session of the Department of Drawing and Painting of Dhaka University, and Afrin Akter Asha of the English Department of Uttara University, Fall-2023. Each one of them was arrested while consuming drugs by the university administration.
The other group consists of Hroi Muing Sang Marma and Krishan Chandra Barman of the 48th batch of the Department of Drama and Dramaology of Jahangirnagar University; Khengchengphru Marma, a student of Development Studies of Dhaka University; Thoainupru of the Statistical Research and Teaching Institute; and Masui Marma of Prime Nursing College. The university administration confirmed to the media that drugs were also found with them.
About the operation, university proctor Professor Rashidul Alam told the media, “We have already installed CCTV cameras at different important points of the university. We had given a notice to all students to return to their respective halls by 10 pm on the 31st night of December 31 to avoid any untoward incident on the campus. We have banned the entry of all outsiders into the campus till January 2. To monitor the issues mentioned in the notice, we conducted a drive at different places tonight. When we went to the Sundarbans area, we were able to catch two groups of students consuming drugs there.
The proctor indicated that the arrested students would face administrative action, saying, ‘Initially we have provided the identities of all of them and taken bonds from all of them and collected all kinds of evidence. Now we will review these issues in more depth and subject to the evidence, we will soon take necessary action against the students as per the university ordinance’.
